The Best Seasonal Jobs That Make Working at Christmas More Fun Christmas is just around the corner! Have you got your career all wrapped up for the New Year? The Christmas break is a perfect opportunity to assess your career. Of course, some people have to work over the holiday period â€" emergency service workers, medical staff, transport staff, hospitality employees â€" and, of course, the clergy, they won’t get their holidays until the rest of us have grown tired of celebrating. Across the UK, around one million people will be hard at work on Christmas Day. Most of the people working at Christmas are carers and nurses, with over a quarter of a million Brits in these professions working on 25 December. Most of us don’t want a job that involves working when everyone else has time off, but I did find an unusual seasonal vacancy online: WANTED: Christmas Light Untangler This November, Tesco has launched the UK’s first Christmas light untangling service in one of their Wrexham stores and sought an enthusiastic individual to fulfil the role of a Tesco Christmas Light Untangler to help customers prepare for the festive season. This new position offers the chance to show that every little helps by running the unique in-store service with a friendly, flexible approach and making a genuine difference to the little things that matter to Tesco customers at Christmas. Roles and responsibilities will include: Manning and managing the Christmas Lights Untangling stand Taking time to listen and help out wherever you can: every little helps Checking lights and bulbs for signs of breakage / broken bulbs and report findings to the customer Handling customers’ Christmas lights carefully to keep everything in tip-top condition Talking to colleagues, sharing your enthusiasm and helping to create team spirit Getting to know your customers, greeting them with a smile and serving them with pride. Giving a brilliant customer experience, making sure you deliver only the best service and put a smile on customers’ faces Successfully untangling customers’ Christmas lights neatly, quickly and efficiently and in an orderly fashion Abiding by our Health and Safety policies Always being there on time and properly presented Being passionate and knowledgeable about the service you are offering Other unusual seasonal jobs include Christmas tree decorator, ice skating rink hand-holder, sprout picker and professional present wrapper. AOL report that a garden centre in Hampshire was looking for a reindeer walker. So, assuming you don’t want to audition as one of Santa’s little helpers there are plenty of temporary seasonal jobs out there. Which lead me to other unusual jobs, of course, sorry couldn’t resist reporting on the survey from Unum who looked at the strangest jobs available in Britain. A professional queuer is hired by agencies for £20 an hour to stand in lines; a bed warmer wears a special hygienic sleep-suit to become a human hot water bottle; a professional tea taster consumes 300 cups of tea a day; and a crisp inspector has to expunge overdone or erratically shaped crisps. Critical factors in making this vital choice will include budget restraints, confidentiality, management style, competitors, skill set and market availability, culture and the seniority of the position. Only the hiring manager is privy to their exact needs and which methods are most suited to finding the right person for a specific opportunity. For the hiring manager to make an informed decision on which recruitment partner they should use, it is vital to know what your alternatives are and also which methods could help or even potentially harm your business. When hiring senior level individuals, most business leaders would agree that Executive Search or headhunting is the fastest, most effective and targeted method of identifying, sourcing and attracting the best candidates. These Executive Search consultancies or headhunters as they are better known, provide a retained service where the client pays a proportion of the fee upfront. This ensures client commitment, exclusivity, and investment in a professional and discreet service. These experts will represent your business in a highly professional and confidential manner and can approach the right people and fast. Candidates are now wise to the recruitment industry, and many don’t trust the security of their personal data in the wrong hands. Contingency recruitment companies often add CVs to their database without asking for candidates consent. This means you are seeing the profiles of individuals who have been previously unsuccessful. Furthermore, imagine the information your competitors can find out from a recruiter â€" without the right safety checks in place and no NDA’s being signed you are giving your competition a wealth of information. Candidates will be approached by several recruiters about the same job if exclusivity is not agreed. This looks unprofessional and demonstrates to the market that the client is unwilling to invest in a professional and discreet headhunting service. If it is a particularly sensitive position and crucial to the success of the client, then its not worth the risk. Also, the rest of the team are at risk of finding out misinformation, and this could have severe consequences for their morale and perception of their employer. Any recruitment company that delivers a contingency project knows their chances of success are slim. This is especially the case if there are many other recruiters working on the same job. Therefore they will not invest optimal time or effort into your assignment. Contingency recruiters work on many projects simultaneously, and it’s a numbers game resulting in little commitment and seeking out only low hanging fruit. You are not paying for expertise but just someone to sift through CVs. Contingency recruiters are extremely expensive considering the service they provide. They may look on a database and make a few calls, unlike retained headhunters whose researchers will scour the market and call up to 100 potential candidates. Is it worth saving a few percent of the total fee when you can be assured of the industrys best service with guarantees for a few points more? Many  prospects return to us as clients, having experienced no success with contingency recruitment firms and we are then left with the massive challenge of approaching and persuading people that have a preconceived negative experience. Whilst we don’t underestimate the challenge a hiring manager has when deciding which route to take it is vital that the initial outlay is not the only determining factor. Having worked in both environments, I can honestly say that retained headhunting is the only truly secure and professional method of identifying and attracting the industrys best high achievers, and the total cost is only marginally higher than other ways that could harm your business. How to Prepare for 3 Types of Interview Questions - Hire Imaging Closed questions The plethora of information out there can sometimes lead folks to think that they have an unlimited ability to tailor their responses to each situation in an interview and that their success in the interview depends on how well they exploit that ability. This is often not reality. Yes, you can modify your answers to the demands of each situation, but there inevitably comes the point where you’ve reached the limit in spinning your answers! I’m reminded of one janitor who referred to himself as a “sanitation engineer,” or a character on an old television show who called himself a “subterranean engineer” when what he did was work in the sewer system. Well, what is in a name? You should not necessarily give up on a job that doesn’t mirror your specific work experience. Your challenge is not to stretch the truth of your answers, but rather to persuade the interviewer that your background and skills do indeed qualify you for the position. If you’ve done your homework, you should have a pretty good idea of which skills are required to handle a job. You should be prepared to show how the skills you demonstrated in your previous jobs apply to the job at hand. You will spend the bulk of your time during a job interview answering three types of questions: closed, open, and leading. Closed questions Closed questions require a yes or no answer or a one-to-two-word answer. Some examples: How long did you work for ABC Company? Where did you get your degree? How many employees have you managed? Have you ever fired someone? Interviewers typically ask closed questions to either verify information from your resume; or to set the stage for more probing questions down the line. The key to answering closed questions is to be direct and concise. If you think that the answer doesn’t quite speak for itself, it’s okay to qualify or elaborate upon it, but avoid overexplaining. Answer the question and then let the interviewer take the next step. Open questions Open questions need more than a one- or two-word answer. Some examples: What was it like working for ABC Corporation? Tell me about your last job. What is it about our company that draws you to it and this job? Open questions give you an opportunity to elaborate on answers you give to closed questions. You can frame your responses in a way that is relevant to the job you’re seeking. The main pitfall to open questions is that they are sometimes broad and tough to answer concisely. It’s okay to politely ask the interviewer to narrow down the question. If an interviewer asks you to describe your last job, for example, you might counter with, “Is there any specific aspect of the job you would like to hear about first?” Leading questions Leading questions can be a minefield if you’re not prepared to recognize them. Here’s an example: “Wow! You worked for XYZ company during a challenging time in economy and market. That must have been a tough environment!” It’s possible that the interviewer is trying to bait you a bit â€" trying to get you to show a side of yourself that you’re not prepared to show. The key to answering leading questions is to stay focused and not allow yourself to be drawn into responses that will not help your candidacy. Saying anything negative about a former employer could make you sound bitter. Or worse, it could make you sound like someone who blames other people or situations for your own consequences or shortcomings. Balance is key. Something like, “It was tough, but it had its positives, too, such as _____.” Of course, questioning gets more complex and categorized. There are skills-based, behavioral and situational questions. Tomorrow is your big interview for the job you really want.  You are excited, scared, and apprehensive, and you already expect that you are going to be nervous. What can you do to calm your nerves? Here are some practical tips: 1)           Instead of telling yourself you are nervous, tell yourself you are excited. Re-labeling your emotion can help you perceive your upcoming experience as fun instead of frightening. 2)           Apprehensive about a dry throat? Bring a bottle of water in your car with you and take several sips once you arrive at your interview site whether you are thirsty or not. (Leave the bottle of water in the car though.) 3)           While you are waiting on the interviewer, practice deep breathing. To calm your heart rate and steady your nerves. 4)           Take a lined writing pad in a portfolio with a pen to take notes during the interview. If you feel your hands wanting to shake with nerves or flail when you talk, gently grasp the portfolio in your lap. Think of your portfolio as a lap pacifier for your nerves. 5)           Instead of saying “umm-mm” or “well-ll-l,” practice taking a deep breath every time you start to speak. You will give more power and energy to your replies and sound much more polished. 6)           Once you are in front of your interviewer, if you are grasping your hands together to calm yourself, make yourself unfold your hands so that you don’t appear “up tight.” 7)           If you tend to bounce your foot, promise yourself not to cross your legs so bouncing is harder. 8)           Usually, your own apprehension far exceeds the actual experience.  Expect a positive experience, practice calming your nerves, and relax.  The interview will end, you will survive, and hopefully, you’ll be the one who gets the job offer! and Terry Wynne Certified Career Coaches P.S.
